FIRST SUNDAY OF ADVENT November 27, 2022
“Stay awake” Since the dawn of the human race, because of the commission of original sin, the human race has been spiritually asleep. This sleep made our ancestors dreary and dead to any supernatural life with God. Our intellect was darkened and our will was lethargic.
God progressively prepares the human race for the dawn, which would arrive with the Savior, for those who dwelled in darkness and the shadow of death. He first gave the law and the prophets to enlighten our minds. This enlightenment increased our awareness of sin and thus the need for a redeemer.
Then in the fullness of time, God sent us his only son. The light of grace dawned in our hearts to help us look at the world from God’s perspective. No longer are we children of darkness, but of the light.
We also know he will come again, as the Gospel reading points out. And he will then separate the children of the light from the children of darkness. In this in between time, we need to, as St. Paul said, put on the armor of light. Conduct ourselves as is in the day. We need to stay awake. This advent, we begin to retell our story – to remind us not to be spiritually lazy, not to be lacking in virtue, but rater be children of the light.
God’s is coming, believers must always be prepared.
