I.) Oprah Winfrey is quoted as saying, “Lots of people want to ride with you in the limo, but what you want is someone who will take the bus with you when the limo breaks down.” Some people will be your friends when it is convenient. But what we all want is someone who shows no partiality, someone who will be with us in good times and bad, someone who will stay with us through thick and think. That is a true friend – and when we find one – we find a treasure beyond all price.
II.) We find an example of this in today’s Gospel. Notice some “people” brought the deaf man to Jesus. The hidden association is that they were looking out for one another. To be deaf 2,000 years ago was a serious handicap. It would require the assistance of friends from time to time but on a spiritual level, it was very serious. If you were deaf, you could not hear the Word of God. There were no bibles written at that time, which meant you would be forever separated from God. In these dark times, where there seemed to be no hope, the deaf man’s friends brought him to Jesus who gave the man, not only hope, but also his hearing. Now, he could hear God’s words. His ears were opened so that he could hear!!!!
III.) And what about us? Do we know someone who is spiritually deaf? Blind? What type of friend will we be? Jesus is the healer who shows no partiality, who gives us hope in times of doubt. We who know Him, have seen Him, we are called to bring others to Him. This is what true friendship is all about. This is what the true faith is all about.
