Did you know that only 1 US President was inaugurated 4 times? Franklin D. Roosevelt. He took the oath of office each time on a family bible opened to the scripture passage we heard today as our 2nd reading. FDR was not a religious man but somehow Paul’s words spoke to him. I pray that these same words speak to us. Speak to us because our world, church, parish has challenges and as Saint Paul reminds us, each one of us has gifts. These gifts are meant to be used for the good of the community. Our gifts are given to us by God, and when we begin to use these gifts in the way God intended, we discover who we are – the Body of Christ. This is the “new deal” of Jesus. We all have a part to play in God’s plan. No part is insignificant, and no part is so great that it can take the place of others. Think of what this means. He tells us: “You are the Body of Christ.” Each task is necessary and noble – no one thing is insignificant. The New Deal of Jesus is a Big Deal. All are part of the whole. Everyone has a function. Thus, you and I are called to ask ourselves: “Are we doing our part for the body…our part to help change the world: food, help, jobs, health?” Just as all the parts of the body work in concert with one another, so we must. This message is both encouraging and challenging. Today’s 2nd reading spoke to FDR “God is with us and we have nothing to fear but fear itself.” Hopefully these same words also speak to us. Together we must do our part. It won’t be easy.
